ANEURYSM OF SINUS OF VALSALVA

Aneurysm of Valsalva is a rare disease of heart. Most of the cases are congenital in origin but can be acquired due to endocarditis, trauma etc. Symptomatically they are silent and can cause hemodynamic problems and symptoms later on at any point of time. In above picture there is an aneurysm sac clearly visible in the non-coronary sinus ( aneurysm of sinus of valsalva )

RSOV

When aneurysm of sinus of valsalva ruptures , symptoms are usually acute or of small duration.  Symptoms may vary from mild to severe depending on the size of the sac and shunt created by the rupture. Acute onset of breathlessness, abdominal pain, chest pain may be the alarming symptoms. This condition can be diagnosed with echocardiography. In above picture communication between RA and Aorta due to defect is shown with a surgical instrument.

TREATMENTS

RSOV REPAIR

The treatment of RSOV may vary from device closure to emergency surgical repair of the defect. Modality of treatment depends on the location and size of the defect. In most of the cases Aortic Valve may be involved causing severe AR, so may need to be changed. It is very critical to save the native aortic valve if possible. In the above picture the repaired defect is shown from right atrial side. The defect is closed in arrested heart with patch to close the defect.
