PDA is persistent connection between the two great arteries of the heart, The Aorta and The Pulmonary Artery after the birth. This connection is normal and required for baby's circulation before birth inside the mother. In maximum cases it closes by itself after the birth or before the first birthday of the baby. But few larger connection persists in the child which causes symptoms of heart failure or wet lungs. This needs to be closed if significant shunt of blood persists.
In current era, most of the PDA are being closed with the device without surgery. The PDA closure surgery are reserved for the patient, where PDA or The patient is not suitable for device closure.
